A Story Carried Through Football
When House of Darwin was invited to design the 2026 Melbourne Demons Indigenous Guernsey, we saw it as an opportunity to do what we do best: create a platform for Aboriginal stories to be seen, shared and celebrated.
At the heart of the guernsey is artwork by emerging Warlpiri artist Vanetta Hudson from Nyirripi. Vanetta's work carries stories passed down through generations of her family, preserving knowledge, history and culture through art.
The Dreaming depicted in the artwork tells the story of an old man and his sons. While the sons hunted, the old man gathered food for himself. One day, the boys unknowingly caught a kangaroo that was sacred to him. In response, the old man used his magic to create a great fire. The fire followed the boys across Country, pursuing them on their journey until it eventually surrounded them.
Like many Dreaming stories, it is layered with lessons, relationships to Country and cultural knowledge that have been shared for generations. Through Vanetta's artwork, that story continues its journey.
Our connection with Vanetta began on a trip through Central Australia. We first met her in Yuendumu while travelling to Nyirripi and spent time with her and her son, both passionate Melbourne Demons supporters. We crossed paths again at the AFL game in Alice Springs and quickly realised how much this project meant to her. From those conversations, a collaboration was formed that was built on trust, respect and a shared desire to see her story reach a wider audience.
As a social enterprise, House of Darwin delivered the creative direction, design development and production of the guernsey in-kind.
We believe the value of a project like this extends far beyond a commercial outcome. Our responsibility is to create opportunities for Aboriginal artists, communities and stories to be elevated on national and international stages. Through this project, we were able to support an emerging artist, ensure cultural integrity remained at the centre of the process, and help bring a powerful Warlpiri story to one of Australia's biggest sporting platforms.
Every time a player pulls on this guernsey, they carry more than a design. They carry a story that has travelled through generations, from family to family, across Country and now onto the AFL field.
For us, that's what meaningful design looks like.
Not simply creating something people can wear, but creating something that carries culture, honours community and ensures the stories of this Country continue to be told.
